Here’s what to expect at your skin cancer screening exam
Summer is on the horizon, making it the perfect time to discuss the importance of getting regular skin cancer screenings. If you’ve never had skin cancer, you should see your dermatologist at least once a year for a skin cancer exam. If you have had skin cancer in the past, get an exam every six months.
A barrier that some people may have to scheduling their annual exam is being nervous about not knowing what to expect. To help calm those concerns and encourage everyone to get their yearly or bi-yearly skin cancer screening from their dermatologist, I’ve put together a quick guide on what to expect before, during and after your appointment.
Preparing for your appointment
Keep these easy prep tips in mind the day of your appointment:
Remove nail polish if possible so your dermatologist can easily see under your fingernails, a common place for certain types of skin cancer like melanoma.
Wear your hair loose and don’t use heavy styling products so your dermatologist can easily examine your scalp.
Wear minimal makeup so your dermatologist can easily examine your facial skin.
Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to remove.
During your appointment
Most skin cancer screenings take 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many moles you have and whether or not you’ve had atypical moles or skin cancer before. You will be asked to undress and change into a gown so your dermatologist can perform a full-body examination. He or she will check hard-to-see areas like your scalp, behind your ears, under your fingernails and between your toes, looking for any suspicious-looking spots.
During this time, let your dermatologist know if you’ve noticed any new or strange-looking moles on your skin for further examination.
If your dermatologist sees any potential signs of skin cancer, he or she may perform a biopsy, which involves taking a small sample of skin for further examination. This process is typically quick and easy.
After your appointment
If a biopsy was performed, you will be given instructions on how to care for the biopsy site before you leave and may be asked to make a follow-up appointment. Otherwise, if no issues were found, you’ll be encouraged to keep up with self skin checks at home in between your regular appointments. You can go about your normal routine directly after your appointment.
Bottom line
Getting a yearly skin exam is quick and easy but can have a profound impact on your skin and overall health. Regular screenings can catch skin cancer early, making treatment more effective. Don’t forget to make your appointment!
