We all know that the sun ages us and that we should avoid it. But it’s summer, and we live in Florida with so many fun things to do outside. So how do we get sun and minimize the damage at the same time? Here are my top 10 sun protection tips for summer fun.

1. Take a Heliocare® supplement

Heliocare contains a unique fern extract that helps to decrease cellular damage from the sun. Take Heliocare daily or before going in the sun for added protection.

2. Apply an antioxidant serum

Antioxidants neutralize damaging free radicals that are created by things like the sun’s UV light. Apply an antioxidant serum such as Essopi Triple Antioxidant Serum or a vitamin C serum before you apply your sunscreen to help neutralize skin damage caused by the sun.

3. Apply SPF of at least 35

Use SPF 35 or higher on a daily basis — but make sure you apply enough of it to get its full protection. Studies show that most people only apply about 25% of what they really need. Always apply at least a half teaspoon to your face. I apply mine, wait five minutes for it to soak in, then apply it again.

4. Use water-resistant sunscreen if swimming

Make sure your sunscreen says “water-resistant” on the bottle if you will be swimming or sweating a lot outside.

5. Reapply SPF after swimming

Reapply your sunscreen as soon as you get out of the water or are finished with a sweaty outdoor run or other exercise.

6. Reapply SPF every hour

Reapply your sunscreen every hour, even if you weren’t in the water or sweating.

7. Wear sun protective clothing

Wear a hat and sun protective clothing for added UV protection. I swim laps frequently in a long-sleeve sun shirt and some sun protective tights. They make cute onesie sun protective suits you can wear, too.

8. Eat fruit in the morning

Eat fruit in the morning before getting sun exposure so you have antioxidants in your system to neutralize free radicals from sun exposure.

9. Take vitamin C

Take a vitamin C 500 mg in the morning before getting sun and again in the evening after getting sun exposure.

10. Take vitamin D before sun exposure

If you take vitamin D vitamins, take them before you go in the sun because they will be more effective.

Bottom line

While it is important to avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible, this is not always realistic, especially during Florida summers. The tips above will help you minimize the risk of sun damage so you can still enjoy the outdoors!
