If you are resolving to take better care of your skin in 2022, achieving this goal might be easier than you think. Follow these four easy steps to revamp your existing skincare routine into the perfect regimen for your skin type to get and maintain healthy, glowing skin all year long.

1. Find out your skin type

A surprisingly large percentage of women and men do not know their skin type and, in fact, incorrectly believe that their skin is dry or oily. If you are using the wrong products for your real skin type, not only will you not see the results you are looking for, but you might unknowingly be making matters worse.

If you do not already know your skin type, visit Skin Type Solutions or see a board-certified dermatologist to assess your skin and explain your Baumann Skin Type. Once you are equipped with this knowledge, you and your dermatologist can assess your existing skincare regimen and make adjustments based on your newly discovered skin type.

2. Toss out expired products

Most of us are guilty of keeping a makeup or skincare bag full of products that have been there for the past few New Years’ celebrations. However, using old or expired products could be keeping you from seeing the skincare results you want. Old makeup products accumulate dirt and oil, which are then transferred to your skin where they can contribute to acne and other problems.

Expired skincare products like sunscreen or retinol lose their effectiveness, so even if you diligently apply them, you may not see the results you should.

3. Use products in the right order

The order in which you layer products on your skin has a profound effect on the end result. Some treatment ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, and vitamin C do not always interact well with other ingredients and thus need to be applied in a specific order to minimize side effects like dryness and flaking and maximize results.

Generally speaking, apply skincare products in this order:

  1. Cleanser

  2. Treatment products such as vitamin C

  3. Moisturizer

  4. Sunscreen

In some instances, this order may be adjusted. For example, if you are starting a new retinoid regimen and you are prone to dry skin and flaking, your dermatologist may recommend applying your moisturizer before the retinoid to slow the absorption and minimize side effects while your skin adjusts.

4. Try a tinted sunscreen

Wearing a daily sunscreen is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine, but many people find it difficult to find an SPF that they love. Tinted sunscreens contain mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide instead of chemical sunscreen ingredients, as well as a light tint in a range of shades. Some people choose to layer tinted SPF to achieve a slight hue instead of applying a heavy foundation for a more natural look.

Another added benefit of tinted vs. non-tinted SPF is that tinted sunscreens also provide protection from blue light, whereas non-tinted sunscreens do not.

Bottom line

In just a few simple steps, you can completely revamp your skincare routine to put your best face forward in the new year!
