Restaurants and bars open temporary, “pop-up” operations all the time to test a new concept, but here’s one you don’t see every day: A historic food market in Madrid is popping up in Miami’s Bayfront Park (301 Biscayne Blvd.) from Saturday through the end of January.

La Feria del Mercado de San Miguel is a traveling spinoff of Madrid’s 100-year-old El Mercado de San Miguel. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez and Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado will lead a private ribbon-cutting Friday night, before the 9,000-square-foot, open-air market welcomes visitors at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Guests will find food and drink kiosks selling all sorts of Spanish tapas and delicacies: acorn-fed ham, gin and tonics, squid-ink paella, montaditos, gazpacho, fruits, meats, fish and more. The market is set to run through Jan. 31 before moving on to another U.S. city yet to be announced.

“Miami was the obvious choice for our first pop-up destination, as no city in America has embraced the Spanish-American cross culture quite like this one,” said Montserrat Valle, owner of Mercado de San Miguel who oversaw the market’s major renovation in 2009.

Valle selected the Spanish chefs and vendors who will be running La Feria. She also brought on local producers like Zak the Baker, Proper Sausages, Mimmo’s Mozzarella, Miami Smokers and others to give the market some Miami sense of place.

The space itself is a mix of tented interior areas and outdoor seating, designed to re-create the atmosphere of the original Mercado. Four main food stations and a circular bar serve as La Feria’s focal points, with smaller stands and carts positioned throughout.

Admission is free, and food is priced from about $2 for small tapas to $8 and up for larger plates like paella and Josper-grilled meats. La Feria’s hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
