Three tons of cheese recalled after listeria found

A Miami Gardens company has recalled 6,000 pounds of cheese because of listeria found in the food.

La Nica Products’ Quesos De La Costa Queso Duro Blando was distributed only to retail outlets in California.

Quesos De La Costa Queso Duro Blanco comes in 1-pound plastic bags. This comes from lot No. 254 with an expiration date of Aug. 31, 2017. Consumers who have this cheese can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can call La Nica at 305-621-8810 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Most recalls involving listeria, including the recent mass recalls by Aunt Jemima owner Pinnacle Foods, are precautionary after listeria has been found in the production facility. This recall follows the Florida Department of Agriculture finding listeria in the finished product. La Nica has stopped production and distribution of the cheese.

Listeria, as the recall notice states, “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
