Veronica Menin and Marcela Llodra, Founders and curators of Conscious Bite Out

Why they’re in the Food 50: Veronica Menin and Marcela Llodra are among South Florida’s original gangsters of plant-based, organic, sustainable, raw and vegan cuisines. They’ve watched the seeds they planted with their Conscious Bite Out dinner series at downtown gallery The Sacred Space grow from a niche food culture into a full-fledged movement. Menin and Llodra lead nutritional-health workshops — Menin also owns Miami vegan bakery Piece A’ Cake — and partner with chefs on veg-friendly recipes in addition to their Conscious Bite Out pop-up dinners and events. Today, South Florida fully embraces juicing (see JugoFresh) and clean eating (Basil Park, Oolite) and plant-based diets. Seed, Miami’s first vegan food festival, was a success last year and will return in the fall, and (shameless plug) Edgy Veggie, the Miami Herald’s vegan-vegetarian column written by Ellen Kanner, has doubled its frequency to twice-monthly. Menin and Llodra were early adapters to this healthier way of life and have been constant ambassadors of the lifestyle.
