I-95 southbound lanes closed as car heading in wrong direction causes four-car crash

One man was killed in a four-vehicle collision caused by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 Thursday night, resulting in all southbound lanes being shut down.

The KIA SUV was headed north in the southbound express lane, near Northwest 103rd Street, just before 8 p.m., according to FHP spokesman Alex Camacho. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol units were dispatched.

Camacho told news outlets that southbound lanes will remain closed "indefinitely" as the investigation will last through the night. He is asking "all motorists to seek an alternative route."

Camacho said the SUV collided with multiple cars, and a 24-year-old man was reported dead after being ejected from his Nissan and striking a guardrail. The man has been identified as Mathias Akwa.

The driver of the SUV, 27-year-old Ronald Ferguson, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He has a fractured arm, but is in stable condition, according to Camacho.

One other driver has been taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. No one else involved in the crash has been hospitalized.

Camacho said it is unclear how many people were involved in the collision. "It's a big scene, and there are vehicles everywhere." He said the department is also uncertain what had caused the driver to head north on a southbound road.

"It's going to take some time to determine that," as well as "to determine how long he was traveling the wrong way."
