“Baby Andres” died on Saturday.

The five-month-old baby, who had been on life support, died at Miami Children’s Hospital, a friend of the family, Nicole Rodriguez, told the Miami Herald. The boy’s death comes just days after he was allegedly beaten by the mother’s boyfriend, Antwan James Sawyer, 27, who was later jailed on charges of child abuse and attempted felony murder. The boy would have turned six months old on Sunday.

The baby had been hospitalized since Monday with severe brain injuries, a bruised lung, retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes and bruises to his buttocks. The baby’s mother, Sascha Marie Garcia, left the child in the care of Sawyer at her South Miami apartment on Monday.

Sawyer lives in Broward County, but was staying with Garcia.

Sawyer told Miami-Dade police detectives that the baby had fallen out of bed.

The injuries “are not consistent with the defendant’s statement and indicated the injuries were non-accidental,” according to the Miami-Dade arrest report.

Sawyer was arrested Tuesday and remains in jail at the Turner Guilford Knight correctional facility. He has a lengthy criminal record that includes charges of trespassing, grand theft, cocaine and marijuana possession, and in 2010, aggravated assault with a weapon.

Police have not said whether Sawyer will face additional charges in the case.

A candle-light vigil was planned for Saturday night at United Methodist Church in Miramar, organizers said.
