Two-year-old girl found dead at the bottom of Miami Gardens pool

A two-year-old girl is dead after being found at the bottom of a swimming pool in Miami Gardens, police said late Friday night.

Officials say the toddler, who has not been identified, was in the care of her grandmother and adult brother at the time of the drowning. The girl’s mother had left the home to run an errand.

“When the mother returned, she discovered her daughter at the bottom of the pool,” said Miami Gardens police spokeswoman Karen Clarke, noting that the in-ground pool did not have a security fence.

Police responded to the scene along the 21100 block of North Miami Avenue at around 6:52 p.m.

The girl was transported to Jackson North Medical Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue where she was pronounced dead, officials said.

The city’s homicide unit is conducting the investigation, which is still ongoing.
