This week in Miami: previews of Latin America art offered in upcoming auctions

For Miami devotees of Latin American art, this week offers two rare opportunities to see great works available for sale.

Phillips, the New York-based auction house, showcases more than 30 works offered in its May 24 New York sale in Miami’s Design District. Even those who aren’t bidding can preview works by Matta, Gabriel Orozco, Carmen Herrera, Roberto Obregón and Jesús Rafael Soto. The free exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through April 23, and noon - 5 p.m. April 24 at the Palm Court event space, 140 NE 39th Street, Miami.

Thursday, Phillips will host a book launch for Matta: On the Edge of a Dream by Thomas Monahan, with a presentation by the author, at 6:30 p.m. at the show. RSVPs are required at rsvplatin@phillips.com.

Also this week: An invitation-only event previewing works on sale in Sotheby’s New York sale of Modern Latin American art. The date of that sale: Also May 24. Collectors will be busy.
