Pro wrestling champs create art on another canvas at Miami art museum exhibit
Two pro wrestling champs are creating outside the ring on another canvas — and displaying their artwork.
All Elite Wrestling / Ring of Honor Pure Champ Lee Moriarty, along with All Elite Wrestling women’s champ Thekla Kaischauri, will be part of a discussion on art and wrestling from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 20 at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, 1103 Biscayne Blvd. The discussion helps kick off a new exhibit at the museum, “Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture,” which opens Thursday, March 19, and runs through Aug. 23.
The two wrestlers are speaking during a two-day conference, “Game Time: Dialogues on Art, Sports and Headlines,’’ which runs from 1 to 9 p.m., March 19-20 at PAMM. Other conference talks include:
- Poetry readings by actor Vincent Piazza and MacArthur Genius Grant poet Hanif Abdurraqib
- The U.S. premiere of On the Line, a documentary exploring the lives of three professional fighters
- A talk on the art of boxing
- “Playing Field to Museum Gallery,” exploring the relationship between contemporary art and sports
- A panel on sports media, featuring C. Isaiah Smalls, covers the Miami Dolphins for the Herald; Jake Troyli, artist (“Get in the Game”) and Franklin Sirmans (Sandra and Tony Tamer Director, PAMM).
Desmond Howard (sportscaster; former NFL Player; Super Bowl XXXI MVP; 1991 Heisman Trophy winner) will also be there. For more information on the Game Time panel discussions, visit https://gametimesessions.com/
Here is my video interview with Moriarty and Thekla about the Miami showcase, their artwork, pro wrestling and more.
Moriarty’s and Thekla’s artwork will be on display as part of the “Get in the Game” exhibit at PAMM. Their artwork will also be featured at Sunset Flip, an exhibition in the Miami Design District, curated by NADA board member Adam Abdalla in partnership with Nina Johnson.
On view from March 19–29 at 140 NE 39th St., Suite 203, Sunset Flip features eight of their works, including three never-before-seen tennis paintings by Moriarty to coincide with the Miami Open.
