Art season ending? Nope. New exhibits and events abound in Miami starting in May
By some calendars, the art season is coming to a close. Saturday marks the final day of the historic Arte Povera exhibition at the Margulies Collection, with guided tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (Register by email at mcollection@bellsouth.net.)
But most museums and galleries have embraced Miami as a 12-month arts destination. Here’s a glimpse of what’s on tap:
▪ Direlia Lazo has curated shows at the Havana Biennial, Faena Art and China’s Times Museum Guangzhou. Through May 24, her curatorial eye can be seen at Little River’s Dot Fiftyone Gallery: Laura Marsh: “Knots hold intentionality,” featuring work by Laura March, and “Remembering something differently,” with work by Oscar Abraham Pabón. 7275 NE Fourth Ave., Unit 101; 305-573-9994; dotfiftyone.com.
▪ Photography fans are in for a treat. On May 7, the Frost-FIU Museum of Art opens an exhibition of works by Moroccan Lalla Essaydi, who creates intriguing images of Arab women that are both modest and surprisingly sensual. “image and Text” — referring to the calligraphy displayed on the women’s bodies — runs May 7-Aug. 7. frost.fiu.edu.
▪ Wynwood’s Nader Museum is extending its “Botero Immersed” show through June 30, matching works by the Colombian master Fernando Botero with music composed by Emilio Estefan. Tickets at www.boteroimmersed.com.
▪ The annual Artists Open day offers a fun, free opportunity to meet artists and learn about their work at 300 studios all around town. This year’s open is slated for May 21. Find maps and details at www.artistsopen.miami.
OPEN CALL
In recent years, the famous Coppertone Girl billboard has graced Biscayne Boulevard at Northeast 73rd Street as a marker of the Upper East Side’s Mid-Century Modern heritage. As charming as it is, the blue-eyed blond-haired toddler is a relic of a far different time.
What would a relevant Miami icon look like today? Who would replace the blondie on the beach whose dog is tugging at her drawers?
Recognizing the societal impact of pop culture, the Green Space is inviting local professional artists to reimagine this image in terms of today’s multicultural Miami. Artists are invited to submit ideas for 2- and 3-D media and videos; NFTs are not eligible. All concepts should convey concepts of inclusion, community empowerment and education. Some size limits apply.
The deadline for idea submissions is June 28. Ten applications will be submitted for execution, with a stipend of $5,000 to each chosen artist. The works will be exhibited at the Green Space from Nov. 10, 2022, to Jan. 14, 2023. For questions, contact Green Space Program Director Pamela “Zee” Lopez, plopez@greenff.org.
MURALS AT SEA
Miami artists will be taking their practice aboard, thanks to a collaboration between Windstar Cruises and Miami’s Fountainhead Arts. Fountainhead, which elevates and supports arts, will assist Windstar in selecting local artists to paint murals aboard three Windstar yachts and at the line’s new headquarters in Doral.
