Works by artists from Miami’s Fountainhead residency are all around Art Week fairs
When Kathryn and Dan Mikesell started the Fountainhead artists residencies back in 2008, they wanted to elevate artists who often were under-represented in the art world.
“I was still working in tech then,” said Kathryn. “We used to fly artists in on our frequent flyer miles.”
Over the past 16 years, the one-month Fountainhead residencies have become a significant connection point for emerging artists, thanks to support from foundations and individuals. More than 580 artists, three at a time, have been chosen through a competitive process for the opportunity to connect with each other and Miami art lovers. Among past fellows are art stars Derek Adams and Christina Quarles.
Work by 150 Fountainhead artists can be seen throughout Miami fairs and galleries this week. Here are just a few:
ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH
- Sarah Zapata’s playful installation, “Upon the Divide of Vermilion,” brings textiles and architecture together at the UBS Studio, Art Basel Miami Beach.
- You’ll need to be a UBS client invitee to see Sagarika Sundaram’s amazing textile panel, “Released Form.” Not a multimillionaire? You can see it online. Sundaram also has works at the Allison Jacques booth, F8.
- Wait for the crowd to ebb to get an up-close look at Portia Munson’s “Bound Angel,” just inside the Meridians sector. Munson has assembled ceramics, tablecloths, wedding gowns and extension cords in a depiction of feminity bound to conventional roles. Booth M4.
- At Monique Meloche, booth A9, check out the work of Yvette Mayorga, Ebony G. Patterson, David Shrobe and Lavar Munroe.
- Head to Pilar Corrias booth, F19, for work by Gisela McDaniel and Tschabalala

- Fountainhead Prize winner Octavio Abundez’s work appears at Curro, booth A15.
