Roaches crawl back to put 27 restaurants on the inspector’s bug list

Looks like the roaches came off Spring Break ready to work. Nine Miami-Dade restaurants made the last Roach Report. Two weeks later, 27 Miami-Dade restaurants have a big enough bug problem to get noticed.

Here are the restaurants that were shut down:

▪ Arline’s Seafood Restaurant #1, 2770 NW 167th St., Miami Gardens. Maybe you can’t put all of Arline’s April 12 shut-down on the critters. The inspector saw “Approximately three live roaches observed crawling on the floor behind a reach in freezer located on the west side of the kitchen. Approximately three live roaches observed on the wall in the mop sink closet behind a closed door on west side of kitchen.” The inspector also saw, “Employee handling raw eggs and raw shrimp, went to handling ready to eat foods such as sausage without washing hands.”

▪ China Beach, 3919 Alton Rd., Miami Beach. Not only did the April 19 inspection turn up 8 to 10 roaches scurrying about the kitchen, but “Employee failed to wash hands before changing gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. Also, the restaurant was operating without a license.

▪ China Garden Chinese Restaurant, 27100 S. Dixie Hwy, Homestead. The lone High Priority violation on April 18 concerned the live roach count: “Observed approximately three by bathroom door, two in the lobby area, two under the grill, three under dishwasher machine, two by the three compartment sink, four on the kitchen wall, one by the entrance of the kitchen door.” That led to a shut-down for the day. Well, that and some Intermediate violations, such as “Interior of reach-in cooler soiled with accumulation of food residue” and “Cutting boards stained/soiled.” The restaurant stayed shut down the next day after the inspector spotted six live roaches in the lobby and four elsewhere. The April 20 reinspection got China Garden open again.

▪ Crabs & Seafood Bros., 20723 NW Second Ave., Miami Gardens got the shutdown order with only two High Priority violations. One of them is described: “One live roach inside broken microwave on top of the preparation table, three live roaches crawling on wall by preparation table, one live roach on three-compartment sink, two live roaches behind reach in cooler, four live roaches inside the restroom.

▪ Mom’s Pizza, 1069 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Among the 40 violations and six High Priority violations in the April 20 inspection report, there’s the roach sighting: “Observed two live roaches by the door to the employee bathroom located in the kitchen and one was observed by reach in cooler in front of oven in the kitchen. Another High Priority violation was “food not properly protected from contamination. Containers of seasoning stored on shelf with no tops on.”

▪ New Sangs Corp, 1925 NE 163rd St., North Miami Beach. Only 11 violations and one High Priority one on April 11: “Approximately 10 live roaches under preparation table inside the kitchen, approximately eight live roaches on wall by dish washing machine at the northeast side of the kitchen and approximately 12 live roaches on top of the dish washer.”

▪ Shella’s Caribbean Bakery & Restaurant, 20725 NW Second Ave., Miami Gardens. On April 19, the inspector saw “two live roaches under hand washing sink in kitchen area, three live roaches on the wall by mop sink, approximately 10 live roaches inside reach in cooler gaskets in the kitchen, four live roaches at dry storage area. Also, an employee washed his hands with cold water. The note doesn’t mention if soap was involved.

▪ Subway, Southwest 211th Street and U.S. 1, South Miami-Dade. This Subway was shut down amid one High Priority violation: “Approximately five live roaches under food line front counter area, one under the ice tea machine in the lobby, one under the three-compartments sink.” An Intermediate violation: “Accumulation of black/green mold-like substance on/around soda dispensing nozzles. That’s the violation that the next day’s return inspection addressed.

▪ Take Out Juventud, 6599 NW 74th Ave., Miami-Dade. The inspector who visited on April 19 might have had to go to his smartphone’s calculator for this one: “Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found. Approximately 200-plus in different areas: 10 under three-compartment sink; 40-plus in clean utensils storage area; 30-plus by three-compartment sink and walls; 30-plus in dry storage shelving;10 in prep table; five in coffee station; seven on shelves next to stove; five by the reach in cooler in front counter; three by the ice machine under the counter; one on ceiling tile above reach in cooler; 15 in AC closet; five in mop sink area.”Also, the inspector noted “roach excrement and/or droppings.” These problems persisted through return inspections on April 20 and 21.

Some places received Administrative Complaint Recommended. According to the state, that means the inspector thinks “administrative action will be required to force compliance.”

▪ China Jade, 20703 NW Second Ave., Miami Gardens. Approximately 12 to 15 dead roaches were counted inside a box in the kitchen area out away from the food on April 19. But the restaurant was tabbed as a repeat violator for operating without a state license.

▪ La Belle Rose Restaurant & Produce, 16689 NE 19th Ave., North Miami Beach. Back on Nov. 22, the inspector found a slew of live roaches running around La Belle Rose. On April 21, two live roaches in the kitchen’s cooler gasket was enough to note the repeat violation and slap La Belle with Administrative Complaint Recommended.

▪ Redland 272, 17696 SW 272nd St., Homestead. A very thorough inspector noticed 58 violations on April 12. Six of those were High Priority, including one in which the inspector “observed approximately six live roaches around inside rim of floor drain, observed two live roaches crawling underneath prep table holding slicer by prep area, observed one live roach in cold drawer gasket by cook line. Observed one live roach crawling underneath oven at end of cook line.” The posting says Redland 272 received just a Warning. But as there was a followup inspection the next day that resulted in an Administrative Complaint Recommended not to mention 58 violations, that seems like a misprint.

Some places just got caught with their roaches among the living.

▪ Belkuhy’s Place Cafeteria, 1100 Ali Baba Ave., Opa-locka. When this place was shut down on April 10, as detailed in the most recent Rodent Report, the three dead roaches on the kitchen floor beneath the handwashing sink really weren’t a problem. The three dead rodents in the two walk-in coolers and the droppings they left behind? Problem.

▪ Beyond By Shemtov’s, 514 W. 41st St., Miami Beach. Despite 34 violations, seven of which were High Priority violations and included a Stop Sale order on some eggs as well as three live roaches in the kitchen, Shemtov’s received only “Warning Issued.”

▪ Cubanbuffet, 345 E 49th St., Hialeah. Three live roaches in the kitchen were tabbed a “repeat violation.” The last inspection with a roach issue was May 6, 2016.

▪ El Gauchito Restaurant & Bakery, 4315 NW Seventh St., Miami. Two live roaches on the food preparation table on April 11.

▪ Sergio’s, 13550 SW 120th St., Kendall. One live roach by the back oven on April 13 seems less a health hazard than the two High Priority violations that told on employees not properly washing their hands between dealing with dirty stuff and food/clean utensils.

▪ Shuckers, 1819 79th Street Causeway, North Bay Village. Shuckers appeared on the last Roach Report and Sunday’s Rodent Report. One live roach on April 17 in a non-working walk-in cooler completed the hat trick, three straight appearances.

▪ Sushi Express, 17044 W. Dixie Hwy, North Miami Beach. The lone High Priority violation found on April 14 was a live roach on the cookline.

▪ Three Palms Cuban Cafe, 11500 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. The inspector on April 19 saw two live roaches in the kitchen behind a reach-in cooler on wall and floor. A Stop Sale order also was issued on the Three Palms black beans that were held in a walk-in cooler overnight.

▪ Creative Edge Parties of South Florida, 4029 N. Miami Ave., Miami. One dead roach behind a shelf where clean containers are stored on April 10.

▪ Hotel Colonnade, 180 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. One dead roach by the walk-in cooler.

▪ Mi Ranchito Centro Americano, 800 Ali Baba Ave., Opa-locka. On April 17, the inspector saw “approximately 20 dead roaches on the floor behind the horizontal reach-in cooler,” but the bigger problem were the flies in the kitchen area and that the place was operating without a license.

▪ New Hong Kong, 6868 NW 169th Street, Miami-Dade. In an April 18 inspection that uncovered 29 violations, one of the 18 basic violations was two dead roaches around the kitchen sink.

▪ Palatino Jamaican Restaurant, 3004 NW Second Ave., Miami. More important than the seven dead roaches under a shelf near the kitchen, an employee handled dirty utensils then swung into food preparation without washing his hands. Also, on April 13, the place was operating without a license.

▪ Pomodoro, 12803 SW 42nd St., Miami-Dade. A relatively clean report from April 14 included a reference to one dead roach.

▪ Tony’s Banquet Hall, 1800 W. 68th St., Suite 207, Hialeah. Three dead roaches behind the dishwasher.
