BassX to do South African performance art series
South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga will debut a new iteration of his captivating series The Future White Women of Azania (2010-present) in a free public performance at 8 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Miami Beach Regional Library as part of bassX, the Bass Museum of Art’s series of artistic projects. In this rendition of The Future White Women of Azania, Ruga will perform alongside eight to 10 dancers, all clad in his signature costumes of colorful balloons and tights. Video and soundtrack will complete the work. “Azania,” described in first-century Greek navigational accounts of the eastern and southern African coast, represents modern activists dreams of pre- and post-apartheid black utopia. Reservations are required. Call 305-673-7530 or visit www.bit.ly/1Km4Icu. The library is at 227 22nd St., Miami Beach.
