‘Nutcracker’ ballets and a play arrive for the holidays

The holiday season brings different versions of The Nutcracker (here are the details on three), as well as concerts by two groups of young artists, the Miami Music Project’s orchestras and the Miami Children’s Chorus.

‘NUTCRACKER’ TIME

With the holidays on the horizon, can The Nutcracker be far behind? Of course not.

Miami City Ballet’s beautiful production of the George Balanchine version of the ballet will be at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale, Dec. 11-13. Then it travels to Miami’s Arsht Center and the Ziff Ballet Opera House, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, Dec. 17-24. Tickets at both venues are $25 to $89. Arts Ballet Theatre will perform its version of The Nutcracker, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev and featuring Mary Carmen Catoya as the Sugarplum Fairy, Dec. 11-13 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St., Aventura, and Dec. 18-20 at the Parker Playhouse, 707 NE Eighth St., Fort Lauderdale. A different version of the story, Mouse King, runs Dec. 10-13 at the Mandelstam Theater, 8530 SW 57th Ave., South Miami. The musical tells the Nutcracker story from the point of view of the mice, and it’s a collaboration between Noel MacNeal and composer-director Jim Camacho. ▪ Miami Music Project launches its four-performance Winter Concert Series by its children’s orchestras Dec. 12-17.
