Risen from the Dough by New World School of the Arts grad France-Luce Benson has been chosen as the winner of City Theatre’s 2015 National Award for Short Playwriting. The play will have its southeastern premiere as part of the company’s annual Summer Shorts festival June 4-28 in the Carnival Studio Theater at the Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House. Benson also receives a $1,000 cash prize and will attend the CityWrights playwrights’ weekend June 25-28 at Miami’s Epic Hotel.

Benson’s play focuses on Maryse and Leonide, Haitian sisters who own a Miami bakery and are nervously waiting for a health inspector. Karen Stephens and Chastity Hart play the sisters, and the piece is being directed by Bechir Sylvain, a Haitian-American actor and director from Miami who is also part of this year’s Summer Shorts acting company.

Once the festival gets underway June 4, regular performances of Summer Shorts will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $35-$45. The Arsht Center is at 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Call 305-949-6722 or visit www.arshtcenter.org.
