Miami Dance Festival features performances, panels and events
The annual Miami Dance Festival celebrates its 12th edition with performances, panels, and family and community events throughout April and May. The festival, headed by Momentum Dance Company artistic director Delma Iles, has one of its showcase performances April 18 with New York’s Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company. The program includes Interior Designs, which blends dance and technology, and The Klezmer Sketch, set to klezmer music and exploring Jewish culture and character,. The performance is at 8 p.m. at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St. Tickets are $25-$70 ($12 for students).
A day of master classes in hip hop, jazz funk, contemporary and other dance styles begins at 9 a.m. Sunday at the InterContinental Miami Hotel, 100 Chopin Plaza. The cost is $100 at the door or $85 in advance at dayofdancemiami.eventbrite.com, or email christine.corson@ihg.com.
Other events include a choreographers’ showcase at PAN Performing Arts Center, 13124 West Dixie Hwy., North Miami at 2 p.m. April 19, featuring works from Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, Dance Now!, Tango Axis, Atma Dance, Momentum and independent choreographers. On May 9 there are free children’s performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. of a dance version of Alice in Wonderland at the Coral Gables Public Library, 3443 Segovia St.
The festival closes May 23 and 24 with Miami’s Ballet Flamenco La Rosa in a new flamenco dance drama by artistic director Ilisa Rosal. El Padre (The Father) is inspired by the August Strindberg play of the same name, and will feature live music and guest artists from Spain and Sweden, Strindberg’s birthplace. Performances are at 3 and 8 p.m. at Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 West Flagler St., Miami. Tickets are $25-$50 ($12 for students and seniors).
