‘The Moms’ in Miami at SpongeBob event
Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein finish each other’s sentences. They’re not only best friends but business partners as founders of lifestyle brand The Moms, hosting events all over the country discussing parenthood with celebrities like Hugh Jackman, Molly Sims and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The two former journalists who live seven blocks from each other in New York City, were at AMC Sunset Place Wednesday afternoon to host a Norwegian Cruise Line sponsored screening of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, out Friday. Walking the mini red carpet were the partially animated flick’s “stars,” SpongeBob as well as his big, pink sidekick, Patrick. Among the (talking) guests was former N.Y. Yankees pitcher Jorge Posada’s wife, Laura Posada, a life coach.
Albert, a single mother of two, and Gerstein, married with three kids, are passionate about their roles as CEOs of their households, but still wanted to keep their hands in the workforce. Aside from running events with various corporate partners — and often with famous guests — the women host a parent-friendly radio show on Sirius XM, The MOMS With Denise & Melissa, from 1 to 2 p.m. Mondays.
They say they originally were inspired by the 2011 Sarah Jessica Parker movie, I Don’t Know How She Does It, about a woman juggling family and a high-powered job based on the book by Allison Pearson.
“We wanted to find the perfect balance of career and motherhood,” Albert said.
Added Gerstein: “We thought, ‘There is a bigger conversation to be had.’”
