‘Arrow’ star Stephen Amell OK with supporting role in ‘Ninja Turtles’

Arrow star Stephen Amell had to make a few adjustments after deciding to come aboard for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

For starters, the handsome Canadian, who plays street vigilante Casey Jones in the action adventure based on the popular comic books, had to defer to, well, turtles.

“For me, I’m used to being the lead of a TV show. I’m the title character. I’m the focal point,” he says of the CW superhero series. “This is not about Casey Jones. It was important for me to kind of lay back a bit and be more of a passenger this time around.”

Amell did feel some pressure, though, as he wasn’t part of the first Ninja Turtles movie, which came out in 2014.

“The biggest challenge is just making sure as the new person on a movie that had a lot of success,” he says, “You don’t want to mess it up.”

The Los Angeles resident enjoyed the change of scenery — the streets of Manhattan.

“I feel like NYC is its own character. Kind of like South Beach.”

Amell also appreciated the flexible schedule.

“On Arrow there’s no give and take whatsoever. Turtles was this easygoing thing. Days would switch around. I’d get a call: ‘Hey, you’re supposed to work Friday, now you’re not working until the following Wednesday.’ Or you get the reverse call.”

The 35-year-old brought his wife, actress Cassandra Jean Whitehead, and daughter Mavi with him to New York for the shoot last spring.

But he doubts Mavi, now 2 1/2, will see the finished product.

“She will see bits and pieces, but she’s a little frightened of movie theaters right now. I took her to one and when the lights went down she was not having it.”

But doesn’t everyone love Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello?

“These guys look more friendly than the previous movie. She’s either going to react to them and be like, ‘Oh, look! Turtles!’ Or see them and say, ‘Stop this now!’”
