Tomas Maier has got it made in the shade.

The luxury German designer — best known for chic swimwear, easy, wearable pieces and delicate knits — has launched his first sunglasses collection. An offering of 10 unisex styles are chic meets classic.

“Having worn glasses since age 6, I am very sensitive to the importance of the right pair of frames in terms of necessity as well as the personal statement,” said Maier, who recently opened an eponymous boutique at Bal Harbour Shops. “Your choice of glasses says a lot about you.”

What is the hot, new, It frame?

I personally love the aviator. Mine are extremely light, flat lensed and ultra-minimal. Upon examination you get it, the effort that went into them to make them different. All of the frames are unisex, but obviously sometimes color may dictate otherwise.

What type of materials did you use?

Mostly acetate and metal. There are round, rectangular and tear-drop shapes, among others.

In your opinion, how is the South Florida person different from the rest of the country in terms of style?

Here you can get away with more color, I would say due to the hot climate. I don’t find that much difference anymore in the desires of shapes region by region.

Where do you like to go out in Miami?

When I get down to Miami I usually spend most of my time in Bal Harbour. I think the new Grill at Bal Harbour restaurant is an excellent addition.
