VMAs fashion: The good, the odd and the sleazy

You can say one thing for the red carpet at the VMAs: It’s predictably unpredictable.

Since its inception in 1984, MTV’s annual freak show on parade has seen its share of over the top fashions.

In the winners’ circle Sunday night at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater — in terms of shock value and not moon-men awards — was Ms. Miley Cyrus.

The evening’s host showed up basically naked, in a silver-suspenders contraption that had jewels hanging down around the groin area. The back of whatever the outfit was could not be published in a family newspaper; ironically, the former Hannah Montana’s star entire clan was in attendance.

Note to Miley: Next time, try undergarments, if only for hygiene purposes. Apparently, FKA Twigs got the same “no underwear” memo. As did Chrissy Teigen, whose lacy Marchesa resembled a negligee you’d find on the racks at Victoria’s Secret.

Speaking of Victoria’s Secret, model Lily Aldridge may have gone a little overboard with that waaaayyyyy plunging neckline. It stopped short right before we could find out if she has an innie or outie.

Next up: Empire actress Serayah McNeill, whose dress appeared as if it had an unfortunate run-in with a paper shredder on the way to the venue.

What can brown do you for? Not much, Kim Kardashian. The pregnant reality star just didn’t cut the, um, mustard in that long sleeved, heavily shoulder padded full length gown with giant pockets out front. Just say no!

Nicki Minaj will not be ignored. And we mean it in a Glenn Close-in-Fatal Attraction kinda way. Try to keep up here. The singer apparently has a new “beef” with Cyrus over comments the former Hannah Montana star made to The New York Times about Minaj’s “bad blood” with Taylor Swift. Hey, Nicki: There was no need to be starting something to get press because that quasi transparent Cleopatra-channeling gold dress got you a lot of attention. So what if it was so tight you couldn’t walk?

Some stars kept their heads, turning up in shockingly prim attire such as elders Kris Jenner and Mariska Hargitay. Others who more or less covered up were Selena Gomez (also in black), Demi Lovato, in a pink skin-tight number; Vanessa Hudgens, looking very Oscar-y in a long purple gown; Hailee Steinfeld in a white bell bottomed ensemble; and Gabourey Sidibe in fuchsia.

Sartorial standouts? There were thankfully a few. Props to Taylor Swift for that metallic pantsuit; Kat Graham, in a fun halter-top, Asian inspired print; Bella Thorne, keeping it classy in mint green; Ciara, fancy in fringe; and Bravolebrity Gigi Hadid, who pulled off her yellow Catwoman outfit like a boss.
