Latin stars honored at annual Premios Tu Mundo
La gente have spoken.
Fans had the last word at Telemundo’s live broadcast of the fourth annual Premios Tu Mundo Thursday night.
Held at AmericanAirlines Arena, the Premios celebrated choices from more than 10 million viewers who just wanted to give props to their personal favorites in such categories as TV, film, music, sports, fashion and telenovelas.
Top acting honors went to three drop-dead gorgeous Mexico natives: soap stars Rafael Amaya and Carmen Aub, both from El Señor de los Cielos (Lord of the Skies); and Christian de la Campa of Tierra de Reyes (Land of Kings).
In the music categories nods went to Enrique Iglesias, voted as Favorite Pop Artist, and Daddy Yankee, Favorite Urban Artist.
No doubt Nicky Jam is on a roll. The El Perdon reggaeton star — currently rocking charts with a bilingual version of OMI’s summer smash, Cheerleader — was bestowed with the Espiritu Guerrero award, which recognizes an artist’s warrior spirit. The Massachusetts-born, Puerto Rico-raised rapper also performed later, as did Paulina Rubio, Fanny Lu, Yandel, Alejandra Guzman, Olga Tañon, J Balvin, Jencarlos Canela and Ky-Mani Marley.
Gabriel Coronel; co-host of Telemundo morning variety show Un Nuevo Dia, went home with a trophy for Favorite Entertainment Host; and 20-something Caeli Santa Olalla, whose chatty YouTube videos broadcast from Mexico City for millennials have been viewed more than 350 million times (not a typo), got her due as the night’s biggest “Influencer.”
A solemn moment of the evening was Lucero’s poignant tribute to Mexico’s singing/songwriting legend Joan Sebastian, who died of cancer last month at the age of 64.
Last but not least: Mario Kreutzberger, better known as “Don Francisco,” received the Gigante de Gigantes Award for his lifelong contributions to Spanish-language television and popular culture around the world. His beloved Univision variety show, Sabado Gigante, is shown in more than 40 countries and ends its 53-year run Sept. 19.
