Brad Pitt: war is hell
While the World War II drama Fury depicts a gruesome look at war through the exploits of a tank crew in Nazi Germany, Brad Pitt feels his 13-year-old son Maddox can handle the content.
“He’s a World War II buff,” Pitt told The Associated Press on Wednesday night on the red carpet for the film’s world premiere in Washington, D.C..
Some have criticized the film’s stark brutality. The newly married father of six contends when it comes to what’s appropriate for his children, he comes from “another generation.”
“My father would take us to the drive-in as very young kids, and we’d see Clint Eastwood movies and Kung Fu movies,” the 50-year-old said.
He added: “The world is a beautiful place, but it’s also a very violent place. We talk about it afterward, so I’m not so opposed.”
WRITER BACKPEDALS
Novelist John Grisham apologized Thursday for saying in an interview that many men imprisoned for child pornography offenses in the U.S. probably just had too much to drink and “pushed the wrong buttons.”
Grisham told British newspaper The Daily Telegraph that U.S. prisons were “filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who have never harmed anybody, would never touch a child.”
He said many of those jailed “got online one night and started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, and pushed the wrong buttons, went too far and got into child porn.”
Grisham made a distinction between “real pedophiles” and those he said were being punished too harshly. He said offenders did deserve punishment, but “we’ve gone nuts with this incarceration.”
CAUSE OF DEATH
Joan Rivers died from low blood oxygen during a routine medical procedure to check out voice changes and reflux, the medical examiner’s office ruled Thursday. The comedian died Sept. 4 after she’d been hospitalized for about a week when she went into cardiac arrest during the procedure at a doctor’s office.
Rivers died from “anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest” — brain damage due to lack of oxygen — during a procedure to scope her upper gastrointestinal tract and vocal folds, a spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner said. Rivers had been sedated during the procedure with propofol.
