Gloria Estefan pops up at ‘South Beach’ screening
Gloria Estefan was the surprise guest at a VIP screening for South Beach, at the University of Miami Tuesday night. The legendary singer was there to support Ana Villafañe, who plays Gloria in the Broadway biopic On Your Feet. South Beach — filmed in various South Florida locations about two dueling record labels — premieres on Hulu July 29.
And over at the Soho Beach House on Wednesday: East Los High stars Carlito Olivero and Alexandra Rodriguez. The two actors talked about their characters, — Eddie and Gina, respectively — and their possible romance on season 3 of yet another Hulu show, now streaming. Key word: possible. Sorry, neither was willing to give up a spoiler.
SUNBLOCKED
The good news: British pop sensation Sam Smith is fine after undergoing surgery for a vocal cord hemorrhage in May. The bad news: The 23-year-old Londoner was dealing with a pretty nasty sunburn, thanks to not using enough sunblock during a walkabout in Miami Beach, he told attendees at his concert Monday night at AmericanAirlines Arena.
LUCKY NIGHT
Madonna fans will know this trivia: Friday marks the 32nd anniversary of The Material Girl’s debut album, Lucky Star. To celebrate the quasi momentous anniversary, The Forge will break out specially crafted cocktails called, you guessed it, The Lucky Star. Use the secret password: Jellybean, after her famed producer Jellybean Benitez, to get a free one from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a live tribute performance and DJ Maxwell Blandford will spin his faves from Madge’s ’80s heyday.
MIAMI STYLE
When many hear the word “Maxim,” they think of a men’s lifestyle magazine. However, Kate Lanphear, editor in chief, plans to tweak that image with projects that include designing swimwear for the girl next door who wants to look sexy and stay comfortable while she surfs into the sunset.
“We got to do what we wanted, which was showing my dream; to show women who have a lot of energy, are fun, look really healthy and happy, and we just tried to create a line that really that paid homage to them,” said Lanphear at Saturday night’s fashion show at the SLS Hotel in Miami Beach.
Lanphear’s main focus in the design of Maxim’s first swimwear line was functionality.
“We sourced fabrics, and all of them you can go swimming in, all of them will hold their shape,” said the journalist, who took over the top of the masthead last year. “I got geeked out on how they would function. It’s a perennial, and I try to envision what that lifestyle is like and where you’re gonna be wearing them. It’s generally by the sea.”
