Shannen Doherty says her cancer is back 3 years after going into remission
Three years after announcing her breast cancer was in remission, actress Shannen Doherty has revealed she has stage 4 cancer.
Details of the “Beverly Hills, 90210” actress’s cancer have not been revealed, but she said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Tuesday “it’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways.”
“I definitely have days where I say ‘Why me?’ And then I go, ‘Well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this? None of us do,’” she said on “Good Morning America.” “And I would say that my first reaction is always concern about how — how am I going to tell my mom, my husband.”
Doherty added that she has been privately battling the disease for more than a year, including while she was filming the reboot “BH90210.”
She said in the exclusive ABC interview she felt she needed to continue working on the reboot after the sudden death of co-star Luke Perry, who died last February of a stroke.
Doherty said another reason she worked and kept her diagnosis private was to prove that she could continue to work.
“People can look at that and say ‘Oh my god, yea, she can work, and other people with stage 4 can work too,’” she said on”‘Good Morning America.” “Like, you know, our life doesn’t end the minute we get that diagnosis. We still have some living to do.”
In 2015, Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She announced two years later she had went into remission.
Doherty, who also starred on “Charmed,” documented her previous experience with breast cancer on social media.
In an August interview with People, Doherty said she feels “lucky to be alive every minute, every second of the day.”
“I’m trying to be kinder to myself,” Doherty added. “And I try to live each day as an amazing, precious gift that I’ve been given.”
