“I just finished the remarkable Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson by Peter Ames Carlin. The book is several years old, but the recent Love & Mercy biopic was on my mind, and I'd stumbled across the group's 50th anniversary concert on TV, and I was vaguely aware that we were approaching the 50th anniversary (on May 16) of the landmark Pet Sounds. Brian carried the torch for American pop music pretty much alone through the peak years of Beatlemania, and then he crashed and burned, and it all happened before he turned 25.”
