While it is more journalistic, with one interview after another, his oeuvre represents the kind of travel literature I aspire to. I have long loved the half-hidden layers of cultural history, such as the polite ‘Sirs’ and ‘Ma’ams’ still offered in Miami retailers that are echoes of our Deep South past.”
