“I’m reading Marie Manila’s The Patron Saint of Ugly. The ‘saint’ in the title is the young Garnet, an Italian-American woman living in West Virginia, with a fascinating past and port wine stains in the shape of the world’s countries all over her body. When miracles are attributed to her, Garnet suddenly finds she has to fend off the Church, pilgrims in her front yard and her grandmother’s insistence that Garnet’s situation is a product of fate and family lineage. Funny, fast-paced, and poignant.”
