“Alexander Maksik’s A Marker to Measure Drift, a novel told from the perspective of Jacqueline, a young Liberian woman who in the aftermath of Charles Taylor’s fallen regime has fled to the island of Santorini in the Aegean. During the day, Jacqueline ekes out a living offering massages to sun-tanning tourists on the beach, battling her hunger and avoiding harassment from those who sense her vulnerability. At night, she retreats to a cave in the beach rock which is only accessible at low tide and here she is tormented by her memories of violence, unspeakable atrocity and her complicity in both.”
