Afrobeta amps up ‘Boom’ theater production at MoCA
Boom, a comedic play about evolution and love by acclaimed modern playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb and presented by The Basement Project, is in residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, 770 NE 125th St., North Miami, through Jan. 31.
The show, directed by Oleg Kheyfets, features live original music composed/performed by Miami’s own electro-funk band Afrobeta (Cuci Amador and Tony Smurfio). Amador plays the role of Barbara in the show, and Smurfio, who composed scores for other plays earlier in his career, is the sound designer.
Tickets start at $18.50 and can be purchased by calling 305-677-9200 or visiting www.thebasementproject.org. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Famed Colombian painter Carlos Salas’ retrospective will guide guests to the theater. Saturday and Sunday ticketholders are encouraged to arrive early for complimentary access to all MoCA exhibits.
