Charlamagne tha God in Miami: Radio host dishes on his dream guest
Charlamagne tha God is a smart guy and knows work trips to Miami Beach aren’t always all business.
The radio legend made sure to mix in some pleasure down here amid a stop at The Possible conference at the Fontainebleau.
On Tuesday, the “Breakfast Club” star participated in a discussion with his boss, iHeartRadio CEO Robert Pittman.
The topic? “The Future of Influence,” exploring the impact of AI-driven content — and short attention spans — in today’s ever-evolving media climate. Pittman, who co-founded MTV, turned around Six Flags and led the transformation of Clear Channel into iHeartMedia, knows a thing or two about the engagement landscape.
“I’ve learned a lot from Bob,” Charlamagne (real name Lenard McKelvey) told the Miami Herald. “He’s a person who’s lived so many lives and been at the forefront of so many revolutionary things.”
Charlamagne is no slouch himself. The 47-year-old New Yorker has been with “The Breakfast Club” since 2010, chatting with celebs from all walks of Hollywood, with a spotlight on hip-hoppers.
The highly rated weekday morning program, which includes a podcast, airs in more than 90 markets around the United States. Past guests in the rearview mirror include local talent like Rick Ross, Tekashi69 and Yung Miami, who dished on her infamous ex, Diddy.
Charlamagne recalls one of his most viral interviews ever: Wendy Williams, who remains under guardianship after a frontotemporal dementia diagnosis. In early 2025, the troubled star complained on “The Breakfast Club” about the less than lush living conditions at her facility. The South Carolina native, who got his break at WLBS’ “The Wendy Williams Experience” in the early 2000s, revealed he was worried about his old friend, despite a years-long rift (she blamed Charlamagne for introducing her ex, Kevin Hunter, to his mistress).
“We had a brief intermission in our relationship,” Charlamagne admitted, without telling tales out of school. “But no one wants to see somebody that helped you in your career in that situation.”
Charlamagne, who just signed a five-year extension with iHeartMedia, was happy to see Williams’ message delivered to the world. Despite some other heated interactions with famous people over the years (e.g., Birdman storming out of the studio will forever live in infamy), he thinks he knows how they tick, and why they open up to him.
“You know, I try to be real. I have authentic conversations and approach everything from a fan perspective,” the married father of four explained. “I’m genuinely curious about what it is that they’re doing.”
Who’s on his bucket list?
Queen Latifah, along with her business partner Shakim Compere, who founded Flavor Unit Entertainment in 1995 in New Jersey. The now Miami-based company has gone on to produce multiple projects, including hit movies “The Cookout.” “Beauty Shop” and “The Perfect Holiday.”
“I’m inspired by how Latifah and Shakim were able to build out from the music industry and do so much, but still managed to give back to the community that they’re from,” Charlamagne said. “They could be really dope.”
Charlamagne, while devoted to his craft, isn’t all work. He managed to carve some time to soak up the 305’s weather, vibes and food.
One must-stop — The Licking soul food restaurant, with locations all over town.
“I try to eat healthy, and I like that they can make any fried dish, like tilapia, grilled,” Charlamagne said. “And I always order my sides: candied yams, green beans and seafood rice. So, so good.”
The erstwhile partier who frequented our wild club scene back in the day sees the Magic City of 2026 in a different light.
“As crazy as it sounds, I’m more of an introvert now and don’t do the crowds and everything else,” he said. “I’m here with my family. I enjoy the beach. I just like sitting and listening to the water, breathing in the fresh air. Miami is very good for my mental and emotional well-being.”
Info: Registration for the POSSIBLE conference, which runs through Wednesday, is now closed. Sessions will be livestreamed on YouTube.
