Sam Champion Asks Hannah Einbinder If She Robbed the Louvre While Filming ‘Hacks’ in Paris

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder stopped by Good Morning America on April 14 to promote the fifth and final season of Hacks — and the interview went off the rails almost immediately. Host Sam Champion brought up the fact that the show filmed in Paris around the time of the Louvre heist, and the two Emmy-winning stars turned the coincidence into a comedy bit destined for social media clips.

Champion made it clear he wasn’t pointing fingers. Mostly.

“I’m not making any accusations, I’m just following a timeline because you were there at the exact same time that the Louvre was robbed. I mean I just happened to notice coincidentally,” Champion said.

Hannah Einbinder’s Deadpan Response and Smart’s Follow-Up

Einbinder didn’t miss a beat.

“We were there shortly after, not at the time,” she said as everyone on stage laughed.

Smart delivered the follow-up: “The tiara you wore at the last event was a little familiar,” she joked.

Einbinder, playing along as though she’d been caught, pretended a producer was calling her offstage and got up to leave while the set erupted. After sitting back down, she landed the best line of the segment.

“Yeah, Ava has one of the crown jewels from an ancient prince. She wears it with her Ramones T-shirt,” she quipped.

The Louvre Heist Actually Disrupted ‘Hacks’ Production in Paris

Beyond the comedy, Smart revealed that the real-life Louvre heist genuinely affected the show’s filming schedule.

“Actually, they told us that we could not shoot in the Louvre after they said we could because the robbery was sort of an embarrassment for them, but also when they found out it was an inside job, that was not a good thing. So then they said, ‘No, you can’t shoot here.’ But our producers, man, they don’t take no for an answer, and they kept begging and begging, and finally they said, ‘OK.’”

Even after gaining access, restrictions applied.

“Because we were going to have the whole place to ourselves, it was going to be after hours, but they said, ‘You can shoot here, but it has to be when the museum is open, you can shoot in this one small section of the Dutch masters.’”

Both Stars Admitted to Taking Souvenirs From Set

Before the Louvre bit took over, one host asked whether the stars took anything from the Hacks set after wrapping the final season.

“I managed to cop a few souvenirs, yeah,” Smart said.

Einbinder was more forthcoming about her haul.

“I will admit I took a lot of Ava’s clothes,” Einbinder said. “So if you happen to see me out in one of Ava’s shirts just look the other way. No you didn’t.”

What Smart and Einbinder Said About ‘Hacks’ Season 5

Hacks has won 12 Primetime Emmy Awards in total, with Smart winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

Smart teased that the final season represents a tonal return after a heavier fourth outing.

“Season 4 got a little bit dark,” Smart said. “I was worried that people would hate me, but I think, because they cared so much about the relationship, they were willing to go anywhere with us, which was really wonderful. But Season 5, we get back to being profoundly silly, which is really, really fun.”

“Of course, we have our sparring throughout, which we also enjoy just as much,” Einbinder added. “It’s so nice for us to be working toward the same goal.”

Showrunner Lucia Aniello echoed that energy during a press conference via Zoom from Los Angeles.

“There’s so many episodes we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time,” Aniello said. “It was kind of like, well, here’s your last chance to do it.”
