Penguins Fan Gets Proposal of Her Dreams — and Sidney Crosby Was There to Watch It

A Montreal couple traveled to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins practice.

They left with a story that has since gone viral — an engagement with an unplanned assist from Sidney Crosby himself.

Mathieu and Sandra made the trip in January, part of a hockey pilgrimage that, on the surface, looked like any other fan visit. But Mathieu had a ring in his pocket and a plan he’d been refining for weeks.

Sandra had spelled out exactly two ways she wanted to get engaged.

“The first one is in front of my family when I do not know, and the second one is having what I love most at heart, hockey, being part of it,” Sandra said in an interview with the team, published March 11.

Mathieu’s original plan was to pop the question at PPG Paints Arena, where the Penguins play their home games.

But while the couple waited outside the practice facility for players to leave after practice, Crosby drove by in his car and happened to stop right in front of them.

Mathieu made an audible.

“I knew that her favorite player was Sidney Crosby, and she didn’t know that I was going to propose,” Mathieu said. “Then, Sidney Crosby passed by, and she wanted to take a picture with him while I was getting ready. She didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that it was happening right now.”

Sandra’s attention was locked on Crosby. She wanted her photo with the captain. Meanwhile, behind her, everything was falling into place. Her son, Shayan, was standing ready with the camera, and Mathieu seized the moment.

After popping the question, Mathieu gave Crosby a thumbs up.

The video went viral on TikTok. The clip captures pure surprise, genuine joy, and Crosby just being himself — stopping, engaging with fans outside the rink.

“We were waiting after the morning skate to try to get some autographs, and the captain came over to see us. I took the opportunity because it was magical for my fiancée,” Mathieu shared in a comment on the video.

A Fandom That Started With the 2014 Olympics

Sandra’s connection to the Penguins stretches back more than a decade. She fell in love with hockey after watching Team Canada play in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Canada, which included Penguins players Chris Kunitz and captain Sidney Crosby, won gold that year.

Despite not knowing much about the sport at the time, Sandra took notice of how good Crosby was. A lifelong fandom grew from there.

“When my son was 7 years old, I told him to pick a team that we would follow, and he chose the Penguins,” Sandra told the team.

Now, 12 years later, Sandra and her son Shayan, now 18, are devoted Penguins fans. Their favorite player is Crosby.

That detail adds another layer to the proposal. This isn’t a casual fan who happened to be in the right place.

This is a family whose bond was built around the Penguins — watching games together, following the team through its ups and downs, sharing that passion across hundreds of miles between Montreal and Pittsburgh.

“The Penguins play a big chunk of my life with my son,” Sandra told the team. “Hockey glued us together, and that’s how we spend a lot of quality and exciting time when we watch the Penguins play. Mathieu being a part of it brings a lot of fulfillment in our lives.”

Mathieu had a plan. Crosby had perfect timing. Sandra got the proposal she dreamed of — one with hockey at the center of it. And Shayan was right there with the camera to capture every second.

That’s about as Pittsburgh as it gets.
