Did You Know Jack Black Has Been Married for 20 Years? Meet Wife Tanya Haden

When Jack Black posted an Instagram tribute to his wife on Feb. 22, the internet did a collective double-take. The actor and comedian had been quietly married for two decades. For many fans, that was news.

Black captioned the post: “20 years! Happy anniversary my love. @tanyahaden”

The woman behind those 20 years is Tanya Haden — a cellist, vocalist and accomplished artist. Their story stretches back even further than their marriage, rooted in a high school connection that took years to blossom.

They Met as Teenagers But Didn’t Speak

Black and Haden first crossed paths as students at Crossroads, a private high school in Santa Monica, California. Their time as teenagers didn’t lead to a romance — at least not then.

In a 2015 interview with Parade, Black opened up about how reserved he was during those years.

“I didn’t date Tanya or talk to her or anything in high school. I was pretty shy. I just watched her from afar,” he said.

It would be years before the two reconnected. The setting wasn’t a Hollywood premiere or an industry event — it was a surprise birthday party for a mutual friend.

During an August 2024 appearance on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Black recalled the moment Haden made the first move.

“She came up to me and said, ‘Hey, do you ever wanna go get dinner? I should give you my number,’” Black said.

He continued: “And I was like, oh my God. Heaven opened up above my head, because it was like, this is the thing that I would always want to happen.”

The couple began dating, and in less than a year, they were married.

A Brother’s Blunt Advice Led to a Proposal

Black and Haden eloped in March 2006 in a private ceremony in Big Sur, California. The decision to marry wasn’t always a given, though. Black described a shift in his thinking once Haden became pregnant with their first child.

“We didn’t get married because it was like, [we] don’t really believe in the contract and that whole thing,” he said, per People. “Why is it necessary? And then as soon as she had a baby in her belly, my brother was like, ‘What the hell are you — you marry her!’”

He added: “I was like, you’re right, dude. I got on bended knee and she laughed and said yes.”

Their first son, Samuel “Sammy” Jason Black, was born in June 2006, just months after the wedding. Their second son, Thomas “Tommy” David Black, was born in 2008.

Over the years, Black has largely kept his family life out of the spotlight, which may explain why so many fans were caught off guard by his anniversary post.

Tanya Haden Built Her Own Career in Music and Art

While Black’s face is one of the most recognizable in comedy and film, Haden has built a career that stands on its own. She is a cellist and vocalist who has performed with Los Angeles–area bands including Silversun Pickups, according to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Music runs deep in her family. Haden is the daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Haden. According to NPR, Charlie Haden’s 2008 album Rambling Boy featured him and his four children — Tanya, Petra, Rachel and Josh — as well as Black.

Haden is also a triplet. Her sisters, Petra and Rachel, are musicians as well. The three sisters formed the band That Dog in the 1990s and later performed together as The Haden Sisters.

During promotion for The Family Songbook, Haden described the musical bond between the sisters in an interview with NPR.

“We usually just naturally gravitate towards a harmony,” she said.

She continued: “But we’ll jump around in a song with different harmonies. Like on the chorus, Petra will sing the high part, and I’ll sing the middle, and Rachel will sing the low, and then for some reason on a verse we’ll kind of reverse parts not really thinking about it.”

They Even Share a Film Credit

The couple shares an unexpected film connection. Black starred in the animated film Kung Fu Panda, and Haden appeared in the film as well, voicing the character Smitten Bunny.
