Singer of ’90s hit arrested after fight at Palm Beach bar. He was ‘irate,’ cops say
Mark Morrison, behind one of the most recognizable (and streamed) songs of the ‘90s, is in some heavy legal trouble.
The “Return of the Mack” singer was arrested Saturday night after allegedly engaging in an altercation at Le Bar à Vin in Palm Beach, TMZ first reported.
According to the police report, obtained by the Miami Herald, cops responded to the high end club/restaurant at around 6:15 p.m. in response to a disturbance.
An officer spoke to the general manager who recounted that Morrison entered the eatery, known around town for its elegant happy hours, theme nights and live music, in a bad mood. The British entertainer began yelling and cursing, “irate” about an in-house event, said the report.
As per The Palm Beach Daily News, the problems actually started Friday night when Morrison brought a singer in to perform and kept asking for the music to be turned up. When management told him to keep the volume down, Morrison was unhappy and came back the following night “looking for a fight,” Fabrizio Riillo, the nightlife manager, told the outlet.
At some point, Saturday’s altercation escalated and turned physical, with the 52-year-old singer pushing the victim with an “open hand and making contact with his upper body,” says the arrest affidavit.
The victim “stated he did not welcome this contact and wishes to prosecute.”
Police spoke with a witness who corroborated the GM’s account of the incident. This person was able to break up the fight by coming between the two men.
About a half hour after arriving, cops found probable cause to arrest Morrison, of Palm Beach Gardens, on a simple battery charge. He was released on $1,000 bond a few hours later; an arraignment on the matter is set for April 15.
“Return of the Mack” is a still popular R&B sample from the German-born musician’s 1996 album of the same name. The song is about a man getting cheated on and getting his groove back. The familiar track, heard in countless elevators, car radios and department stores, has been played more than 500 million times on Spotify, which Morrison recently boasted about on Instagram.
In 2022, he bought his $1.8 million house in Palm Beach Gardens in cash. The sprawling mansion inside a gated community is where he runs his record label, MackLife Records.
