Miami teens - dancers, jazz musicians, artists - among national YoungArts honorees
Teen years are creative, confounding and critical to future development — especially for young artists. Miami-based YoungArts Foundation seeks to instill confidence by recognizing artistic excellence among senior high students and encourage their development throughout their careers with its annual honors.
More than 650 are being recognized this year as YoungArts winners with cash prizes between $100 and $10,000 and the opportunity to learn from such celebrated professionals as actor-singer Debbie Allen, choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov, architect Frank Gehry, jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, writer Salman Rushdie and visual artist Mickalene Thomas. National YoungArts Week, usually attended by finalists in January, will be virtual this year due to the pandemic.
Among the national winners are more than 70 from South Florida in three categories: Finalist, Honorable Mention and Merit. They include:
