Grand Rising: Phoenix Has A Story To Tell

When the world around you, or even your internal world, feels chaotic, a visit to Phoenix has the ability to slow you down. It’s a city where you look up at the cacti and the clouds, and remember that the sun truly does bring brighter days. This Southwestern city is where sweltering heat meets unbridled creativity, and everything you eat, drink, and explore is met with equal inspiration.

Known as the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix has long been a favorite for golf and spa getaways. More recently, however, its food, drinks, and culture quietly rank among the most exciting in the country. With 48 hours to spare, here’s how to experience the best of Phoenix.

Check-In: FOUND:RE

Located in Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row District, FOUND:RE (pronounced, “foundry”) encourages visitors to follow their curiosity when discovering the city. The 104-room retreat combines the comforts of a boutique hotel with the aesthetics of an art gallery by showcasing rotating exhibitions by local artists and visual displays on a six-story exterior projection. Oversized murals demand your attention, decor details are executed with finesse, and the beds are so comfortable you might cancel your morning plans. Designed for travelers who love comfort with a touch of edge, each room is a masterclass in industrial-chic design.

FOUND:RE’s in-house restaurant, Match Market & Bar, is where guests fall into a food spell rather than a food coma. Start with the jalapeno popper flatbread — a creamy, spicy, crunchy mix that makes you forget about carb guilt. Move on to the chimichurri steak sandwich, starring a succulent 5 oz. sirloin adorned with peppers, zesty bleu cheese, and herbaceous chimichurri aioli. Pair it with a delectable drink, including the sweet potato Old Fashioned with rye whiskey or a glass of wine from the restaurant’s expertly crafted wine list, and you’ve got a spread that will impress even the most refined palette.

Swagger Sips at Bitter & Twisted

Inside the former Arizona Prohibition Headquarters, Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour proves cocktails can tell stories just as effectively as people can. Owner Ross Simon, fresh from London’s cocktail scene, crafted a menu that reads like a graphic novel.

Start light with a Limoncetta, a citrus-forward vodka drink, or go wildly bold with the Keep Calm and Curry On, a creamy blend of house rums, coconut milk, sweet pineapple and tangy mango, complete with yellow curry syrup and a spiced chutney rim. Once you’ve built an appetite, try the Korean nachos with gochujang beef brisket or the “proper” fish and chips that bring the flavors of an English chippy to Phoenix.

Tucked inside Wren & Wolf in Downtown Phoenix, Carry On Cocktail Bar is ready to take passengers on a mixological flight from New York to Tokyo. Designed in the likeness of a 70s-era first-class cabin, Carry On takes inspiration from the golden age of travel. Travelers, who have either purchased First Class or Captain’s Club tickets, check in at the bar’s airline desk before being escorted to their reserved seats by waitstaff uniformed as flight attendants. Depending on the ticket purchased, the 90-minute flight includes a welcome cocktail, in-flight snacks and additional craft cocktails. The food and drink menu builds on the travel theme with sips such as the French Layover, made with cognac, elderflower, and citrus, and the Final Boarding Call, featuring coffee-infused bourbon.

Lunch with Soul at Tía Carmen

Chef Angelo Sosa channels nostalgia and pays homage to his aunt, and restaurant’s namesake, with Tía Carmen. Located at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Tía Carmen celebrates the culinary tradition of the Southwest and the farmers and communities that keep these vibrant flavors alive. Sosa believes in the power that food can have when made from a place of pure love, and the menu showcases just that. The tuna crudo is silky and cool, swimming in a corn-coconut broth and adorned with a chile oil that tastes like the smoky, sweet heat of summer. The whole grilled trout is encapsulated by a mesquite-smoked crust that reveals rich, flaky fish on the inside. And of course the crispy plantains don’t disappoint, adding the perfect golden and crunchy accent to any spread, enhanced by a pepper sofrito that provides a slight kick.

For rooftop romance and Mediterranean sensibility, théa at The Global Ambassador delivers. The whipped feta with honeycomb and grilled pita begins the meal like a warm embrace. Lamb chops with mint yogurt and branzino wrapped in vine leaves showcase balance and creativity.

The Saffron Sunset, a blend of gin, lemon, and saffron bitters, shines as a citrusy masterpiece, while the Mediterranean Mule swaps ginger beer for fig syrup and basil. Even if you’re only toasting to surviving Phoenix traffic, this is where you want to raise a glass.
