Solo traveling can be very rewarding. There are no snoring roommates, you can sleep in, and you don’t have to worry about anyone forgetting their passport.

With the increase of American expats and remote workers, booking a solo trip is more common than ever. However, lacking a travel companion could pose a problem in an unfamiliar place, especially abroad.

Travel and luggage experts at Bounce completed a study based on several factors on which countries are best for solo travelers.

The outlet created its rankings based on the following:

  • Things to do (number of attractions and restaurants)

  • Affordability (costs of public transport, food, and hotel stays)

  • Accommodation (number of hotels and hostels)

  • Safety (crime and safety index scores)

  • Weather (average temperature and annual rainfall)

Regarding safety, Japan topped the list with a 76.9 out of 100. One of Japan’s most prominent indications of a high safety score was its low crime index score of 23.1/100 in large cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. The second and third safest countries were found in Central Europe. Switzerland has a safety score of 76.4 and Slovenia scored 75.8.

Travelers heading to Iceland will always have something to do. From volcanoes and geysers to hot springs and glacier-made waters, the country topped the list with the most attractions, with 583 attractions per 100,000 people. The Mediterranean island of Malta offers 353 attractions, and its neighbor, Italy, keeps tourists busy at 218.

While Japan was the safest overall, the outlet compiled a list of countries that would be the best for travelers based on every sub-factor.
