Le Stanze della Fotografia is Venice’s newest addition to its art history scene
As if Venice wasn’t culturally rich enough, the Italian city has introduced another addition for art and history buffs. Le Stanze della Fotografia, a photography museum, opened March 29 on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in a historic building opposite of St Mark’s Square.
Because the museum is located on an island, travelers wanting to visit will have to do so by boat. According to TimeOut, visitors will need to first go to San Zaccaria vaporetto stop B and then take the red line 2 across the water.
Le Stanze spans two floors in a former customs warehouse-turned-boarding school. The building has since undergone a major overhaul that revealed its high vaulted ceilings and large windows, which give visitors a stunning view of the lagoon. The museum also employed architects and designers from Teatro Fenice, a well-known theater in Venice, to create moving set pieces that allow the space to adapt based on the exhibition layouts.
Le Stanze della Fotografia is a collaboration between Fondazione Giorgio Cini, which is home to one of the most expansive photography collections in Europe, and Marsilio Art, which has showcased photographers including Sebastião Salgado and David La Chapelle at La Casa dei Tre Oci on Venice’s southern island of Giudecca.
The debut exhibition in the space looks back on the work of Italian photographer Ugo Muslas. TimeOut states that the exhibition focuses on various eras of his work, such as his portraits of prominent twentieth century artists and his journalistic foray covering the Venice Biennale.
In the fall, another exhibition will highlight photographer Paolo Pellegrin and his work. Spring 2024 will see the retrospective of Hemlut Newton, marking 100 years since the German photographer’s birth.
“Ugo Mulas: The Photographic Operation” runs until August 6. The museum is open every day, except Wednesdays. General entry tickets cost €14 (around $15). For information and to buy tickets, visit here.
