‘Hamilton’ returns to San Juan, Puerto Rico for fundraiser performance
The award-winning musical Hamilton will be returning to Puerto Rico. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will bring the hip hop hip-hop musical to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for two weeks in June.
This year’s run of shows will include a fundraiser for the Hispanic Federation and education nonprofit, the Flamboyan Foundation.
According to Afar, the June 16 benefit performance aims to raise at least $2 million for the foundations. The two nonprofits help raise money for local emergency assistance, hurricane rebuilding efforts, arts organizations, and individual artists on the island.
On Monday, Miranda told The Associated Press about the nonprofits’ significant impact on the community.
“I am so proud of the work that both the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund have done for the Puerto Rican community through their support and funding of grassroots efforts.” He added. “By providing support to activists, artists and community groups on the ground, they have changed the ecosystem for the arts and the nonprofit sector.”
Hispanic Federation CEO Frankie Miranda (no relation to Lin-Manuel Miranda) said the “Hamilton” fundraiser will be a great example to others on ways to support the island that is still dealing with devastation.
“Investing in Puerto Rico is a premise of hope and progress,” Frankie Miranda told AP. “So much is being accomplished. But then the attention goes away or only comes back when there is another natural disaster.”
Miranda is bringing the musical back to Puerto Rico to acknowledge the philanthropy that has been done on the island since Hurricane Miranda in 2017. He also hopes this will shed light on what still needs to be done.
San Juan is prepared for the tickets to go fast as they did in 2019.
The show will return to San Juan’s premiere performance center, Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré.
The show will run from June 13–25, 2023. Tickets are available for evening shows Tuesday through Sunday, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Passes start at $49 and go up to $199; you can buy them online through Ticketera.
The Friday, June 16 performance is the fundraiser, so tickets are a little pricey. They start at $500, go up to $7,500, and can be purchased directly from hamilton.hispanicfederation.org. Attendees of this showing will share the audience with original Broadway cast members—Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), Christopher Jackson (George Washington), as well as Miranda.
Afar states the highest-tier ticket holders will be invited to a pre-show reception with the original cast members and a post-show celebration with the performing cast.
