To celebrate Black History Month, Smorgasburg Miami, Miami’s largest outdoor-food market, will team up with Derrick Turton of World Famous House of Mac on February 25-26.

Although Turton initially planned to become a chef, he instead spent 12 years as Pitbull’s manager, during which time he worked with many notable figures in the hip-hop industry. His father’s unexpected death in 2013 inspired him to return to his culinary roots, and now he has expanded into the restaurant business with three eateries that offer a total of 17 different gourmet takes on mac and cheese, including jerk mac and cheese and jerk pizzas.

Steel pan music, a stilt dancer by Island Groove Entertainment, a live Junkanoo parade, music provided by DJ King Dave on his mobile stage, and other festivities will be held over the course of the weekend to honor Black History Month. With cowbells, whistles, drums, and a horn player, Junkanoo performers in vibrant costumes and masks will lead the parade.

Children will get whistles and can participate in the parade. Sherine Campbell, a reggae artist, along with guitarist Kenzy Lafrance, will both hit the stage for live performances and there will also be an art project in the lounge area. Flags and banners commemorating Black History Month will adorn the spaces of Smorgasburg Miami.

“We’re extremely excited and honored to be able to partner with Derrick to celebrate Black History Month at Smorgasburg Miami,” Gaston Becherano, CEO of Smorgasburg Miami, told Detour. “This weekend we’re looking forward to showcasing black culinary talent, performances rooted in Afro-American culture, and musical acts that everyone in Miami is welcome to experience and enjoy.”

On the food front, Smorgasburg’s vendors and guest vendors will present exclusive dishes that are only going to be served this weekend. These guest chefs have it down to an art and know how to whip up a mouthwatering dish, so expect the food to be amazing. Caribbean jerk chicken from Island Cooking with Afrochef Lela, southern smoked brisket from Wholly Smoke BBQ, healthy soul food from Eat Inn Cheat, fried chicken and waffles from Kome Oyster and Sushi Bar, gourmet jerk mac and cheese from World Famous House of Mac, and more will all be available from guest vendors.
