Two tornadoes caused damage in Broward County Tuesday night as Hurricane Ian approached the state,the National Weather Service confirmed.
Trees toppled in Cooper City and planes flipped in Pembroke Pines.
Just before 7:30 p.m., the first tornado moved north toward Cooper City, forecasters said. As the tornado intensified, the weather service issued a warning telling residents to take cover wth Davie, Plantation and Lauderdale Lakes in its sights.
Nearly an hour later, another tornado was confirmed near the path of the first. Another tornado warning was issued, this time for Pembroke Pines, West Hollywood and Davie.
By 9 p.m., both tornado warnings had expired, but forecasters still warned that gusty winds and heavy rain were likely amid a string of tornado warnings that had been issued Tuesday night across South Florida.
Southeast Florida — from Monroe and Miami-Dade to Broward and Palm Beach — remained under a tornado watch on Wednesday.
Tornadoes take down trees, flip planes
Dozens of pictures and videos were posted to social media showing the damage.
At North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines, several single-engine planes were seen flipped upside down or with wings torn off.
“A #tornado passed over our general aviation reliever, #NorthPerryAirport (HWO) in @cityofppines tonight 09/27/22, causing damage to several small planes and some hangars,” the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport said on Twitter. “As a precaution, #HWO will be temporarily closed until further notice to fully assess the damages sustained.”
Video taken from a Publix Super Market at 9359 Sheridan St. shows shopping carts scattered, palm fronds covering the parking lot, and cars sheltered under a cover.
In a Cooper City neighborhood, an entire tree was ripped from the ground and toppled.
