Jason Fox did not protect Ryan Tannehill in 2015.

So the Dolphins did not protect his place on the roster.

The Dolphins waived Fox on Tuesday, a move that will shave $1.4 million off their salary-cap liabilities next season.

But the move had more to do with Fox’s production — or lack thereof.

The former University of Miami player was ineffective when filling in for injured right tackle Ja’Wuan James in the final nine weeks of the season. He also struggled at left tackle earlier in the season while filling in for Branden Albert. Twenty-four of the 45 sacks allowed by the Dolphins this season came with Fox in the starting lineup.

Of the 80 qualifying offensive tackles graded by Pro Football Focus in 2015, Fox ranked 75th.
