Miami High’s Keyshawn ‘Pie’ Young looking for right fit

For Keyshawn “Pie” Young during his high school career, the hallways at Miami Senior have felt like home.

Young hopes to gain that same comfortable feeling with whichever school he decides to attend over the next few years.

“Wherever I go, it has to feel like home to me,” Young said. “That’s the most important thing for me.”

Young helped restore the Stingarees to respectability over the past four seasons, becoming a leader and an easily recognizable name in Miami-Dade County.

“Pie” plans to reveal which FBS program he will try to elevate for the next few years when he makes his announcement on Wednesday at 1 p.m. during his school’s National Signing Day ceremony.

“It’s been a hard process, but it’s also been good,” Young said. “I’ve just been discussing everything with my family and praying a lot about it so I make sure I make the right decision for me.”

Young, a 5-11, 175-pound versatile wide receiver, has shined on special teams as a kick returner, as a defensive back and even as a quarterback at Miami High.

He is the top undecided recruit in Miami-Dade County, and is rated No. 6 among Dade’s class by the Miami Herald.

Young was a coveted player even in high school, who said he often times was enticed to leave Miami High and enroll at some of the area’s more prominent football programs. Pie stayed and led the Stingarees to winning records each of the past two years.

“I always stayed loyal to Miami High and learned a lot about leadership during my time playing here,” Young said.

Young has had numerous major FBS school offers, including national champion Alabama, Michigan, LSU, USC and Louisville.

On Monday, Young told the Herald he had narrowed his potential choices to USC, Michigan and Louisville.

The latter of the three has come on strong of late in their recruitment of Young, who had 27 all-purpose touchdowns combined over the past two seasons.

“Coach Lamar Thomas has recruited me real hard for a long time, and I talked to [Louisville]’s quarterback Lamar Jackson and got to know him and a lot of the players over there,” Young said.

Young visited USC this past weekend and said he loved his visit to the Trojans.

Michigan is a school making plenty of inroads in South Florida this recruiting cycle and landing a player like Young would only add to the already spectacular class being put together by Wolverines’ coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff.

Michigan, which already has four of Broward County’s best prospects either enrolled or ready to sign Wednesday, recently secured a commitment from Columbus star defensive end Joshua Uche.

In addition to Young, a few more of the county’s top prospects continued to weigh their decisions as of Monday.

Miami Central defensive end Eric Mitchell, one of seven FBS signees and 12 overall for the four-time defending state champions, recently said Louisville, UCF and Colorado were among his top choices.

Southwest will enjoy its first graduating major FBS signee in quite some time when defensive back Christopher Williams makes his choice. Williams, a University of Florida commitment, has been contemplating whether he will choose the Gators or Hurricanes.

Three of the county’s top wide receivers — Columbus’ Jerron Rollins, Carol City’s Montray Smith and Southridge’s Freddie Pinder — remain uncommitted. American safety Antione Webster and Miami Edison offensive lineman Keldrick Cesar are also among the county’s top undecided prospects as of Monday.
