Five Carol City players finalize college choices on National Signing Day
A pair of Carol City Chiefs will be on their way to Toledo together as cornerback Keelen Roberts and defensive tackle David Hood signed with the Rockets in a National Signing Day ceremony at the school Wednesday.
Hood was a long-time Toledo commitment that reaffirmed his status a week before signing; Roberts was undecided until Signing Day.
All-Dade first-team quarterback Stephen “Buckshot” Calvert is on his way to Liberty, where he was committed since July.
Electric and versatile wide receiver Steven Newbold inked with Tennessee State, and Tracy Thompkins made it official with Mississippi Valley State.
Another receiver, Montray Smith, did not sign Wednesday. He had a standing offer with Southern Illinois but decided to wait beyond Wednesday to see if Toledo offers him so he can join Hood and Roberts.
Another option Smith could take up late is a track scholarship at a different program to then walk on to the football team. South Carolina is one school that has expressed interest in doing that if Smith reciprocates his interest in committing more to track than football.
