NFL Took 1 Day of OTAs Away From Buccaneers for Wild Reason
The NFL docked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers one day of organized team activities (OTAs) recently - and the reason why is pretty unorthodox.
During an appearance in "The Ronde Barber Show," Bucs assistant GM Mike Greenberg explained what happened and why the team had to forfeit a day of OTAs, which stemmed from the Bucs having "too much contact" during one of their practices.
"We've had a great offseason, a lot of energy, a lot of good stuff between the offense and defensive line," Greenberg said. "It's been fun being out there, but with that comes sometimes a little bit too much contact. And Todd's got to regulate it a lot after each play, which he does a great job of.
"… The league, really, they'll just ask for [practice] tape randomly from teams from time to time. They'll get through everyone; sometimes they'll go through teams twice. And they picked a day, if we're being honest, we did have contact and we did deserve to lose an OTA day."
Greenberg's explanation gave much more detail about what happened than what head coach Todd Bowles said about the matter a week ago.
"Wednesday's [day off was] by the league, because at the first practice we had too many guys on the ground, so they took a practice from us," Bowles stated. "So Wednesday was by their doing, Tuesday was already set in motion by our doing. And they cleaned it up after that. We understand. We aren't trying to get anybody hurt. That was the basis of it."
No further punishment for the Bucs is expected, and in the scheme of things, they escaped with a minor slap on the wrist.
