The Falcons Are Trending After Spurs' Huge Blown Lead In Game 4
Last night the San Antonio Spurs made NBA history by blowing a 27-point halftime lead and a 29-point overall lead in a Game 4 NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks. The loss was so historic that people have been drawing comparisons to the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons famously lost Super Bowl LI to the New England Patriots, taking a 28-3 lead then blowing the entirety of it in before losing in overtime. That Super Bowl loss was equally historic and sent the Falcons on a downward spiral into total mediocrity that continues to this day.
So when fans saw that the Spurs had committed an equally terrible blown lead on the biggest stage, they got the Falcons trending in a hurry.
The Jokes
Some fans joked that the Falcons and the Spurs are in the same boat now while others believe that the Spurs may have "freed" the Falcons of mockery by having a worse blown lead than them. But just about everyone is drawing the comparison one way or another.
"Falcons fans probably thought the Spurs would take the attention from 28-3. NOPE," one user joked.
"Last thought: Really feels like (basketball) equivalent of Falcons famously blowing 27-3 lead in SB by not running ball/time off the clock. Spurs repeatedly throwing up 3s w/10-plus seconds on shot clock was equally egregious. And Fox not pulling ball out w/1 pt lead is as dumb as it gets," wrote another.
"The Spurs blowing a 29 point lead in the NBA Finals might be worse than the Falcons blowing a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl!" a third wrote.
"The falcons are finally free."
"Tonight's game was a PTSD trigger for Falcons fans. And if you hate the Knicks with every fiber of your being, it somehow made it even worse."
The difference between the two blown leads though is that the Spurs still have a chance to salvage the series. Atlanta didn't.
Down 3-1 to the Knicks, the Spurs can still hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy if they can win at home this Saturday, return to the Garden and win next week, and close the Knicks out at Frost Bank Center in Game 7. The only team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit was the 2016 Cavaliers, who achieved the feat eight months prior to the Falcons blowing that Super Bowl lead.
