New Deshaun Watson Update Could Spell Bad News for Shedeur Sanders
The Cleveland Browns keep insisting there's a quarterback competition. A loud chunk of the fanbase is no longer buying it.
To many fans, Cleveland has created more barriers than opportunities for Shedeur Sanders to seize the starting job.
Despite Watson's uneven Browns tenure, reports entering 2026 described him as the "inside track" favorite for the starting job, while sportsbooks quickly installed him ahead of Sanders.
Even new head coach Todd Monken has consistently framed the battle as an open competition rather than signaling clear momentum for Sanders, despite the young quarterback flashing upside during his seven-game stint as Cleveland's 2025 starter.
That combination of veteran patience, cautious messaging, and continued investment in quarterback depth convinced some fans that the Browns are doing everything possible to avoid handing Sanders a clear path to becoming the franchise quarterback.
Now, a fresh report may add even more momentum to Watson's side of the battle.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, Watson has already "hit it off" with Monken ahead of OTAs.
Fowler reported that Monken's offense includes concepts Watson has run before and "been his best at," a notable shift from the system Cleveland previously used under Kevin Stefanski.
Watson is also expected to factor into first- and second-team reps as OTAs begin, and “could eventually earn this job because he’s a veteran presence.”

Since arriving via blockbuster trade from Houston and signing his fully guaranteed deal, the former Pro Bowler has battled suspension, inconsistency, and injuries.
Watson has played sparingly, struggled to recapture his Texans-era explosiveness, and spent much of the last several seasons unavailable or under scrutiny.
By raw production standards, Cleveland has not received the superstar quarterback it paid for.
But the Browns did not hire Todd Monken to preserve the past.
Monken arrives with a reputation for an adaptable, aggressive offense, built through stops with high-powered passing attacks and modern quarterback-friendly systems.
If his scheme genuinely overlaps with the concepts Watson thrived in earlier in his career, Cleveland suddenly has a football argument, not just a financial one, for leaning veteran.

That's potentially bad news for Sanders.
He still has a path to being the Browns QB1, but Fowler’s report indicates it may be narrowing.
The Browns’ 2026 Organized Team Activities (OTAs) are currently underway at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.
The voluntary workouts are scheduled for May 19–21, May 26–28, and June 2–5, leading directly into the mandatory minicamp from June 9–11, meaning the competition could begin taking shape sooner rather than later.
