Fernando Mendoza Could Help This Raiders Receiver Have Breakout Season
The Las Vegas Raiders received the benefit of the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL Draft, as it gave them the right to select the best possible quarterback from an otherwise thin QB class.
With that, Mendoza carries immediate expectations that he’ll likely start and will prove why he was worthy of being that top selection. Many quarterbacks who go first don’t necessarily prove themselves until several seasons deep into their NFL careers.
He’ll have a relatively talented receiver corps to throw to, including Tre Tucker and tight end Brock Bowers, who were the team’s top options last season, along with Jakobi Meyers, before Las Vegas traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With a quarterback of Mendoza’s talents coming to the team, it’s believed he could further elevate some of the newer receivers, including Jack Bech, who is entering his sophomore season.

Fox Sports’ Greg Auman listed Bech amongst his top candidates for a breakout second year in the NFL, suggesting he has a chance to outpace Tucker and newer receiver Jailen Nailor.
As an NFL rookie, Bech had 20 receptions on 29 targets, finishing the season with 224 yards and zero touchdowns. He played in 16 games for the Raiders, only starting in five, but he could see a lot more throws headed his way with Mendoza.
In college, Bech showed his potential for a breakout season. As a senior at Texas Christian University, he tallied 62 receptions for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns. In his three seasons of college football before that, he totaled 71 receptions for 835 yards and four touchdowns.

With him having a season to get acclimated to the league, he’ll now be somewhat accustomed to how the NFL is. Bech now has a former Heisman Trophy winner who led Indiana to an undefeated season and championship, throwing passes his way.
Will he have a breakout season, though? That will really depend on how quickly Mendoza emerges as a capable NFL quarterback. He has a lot of pre-draft talk and hype surrounding his potential, but that means nothing unless he can translate it into on-field success.
And there are plenty of examples of first-year quarterbacks who struggled before they finally found their groove in the league. Some never quite found the success people had initially predicted for them.
Still, Mendoza seems fully ready to embrace the challenge and lead this Raiders franchise to new success. If he becomes the sort of QB many are expecting him to be early, Bech can certainly shine as the top receiver on the roster in just his second season.
